I am a South African, living in Cape Town. I am the author of the novels Ordinary Runners (published originally as Ordinary Runners’ Everest in 2005); The Deciding Votes, published in 2013; and As the Way Divides in 2019; as well as my poetry in Reflections in Tranquillity in 2020.
Born: Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1939
Secondary schools: Grey High School, Port Elizabeth; Durban High School, Durban
Universities: University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg; University of Natal, Durban and Pietermaritzburg
Other: Fellow of The Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators
I always wanted to be a writer. I studied to be teacher, and taught mainly English for five years until I needed to find a better way of supporting my growing family. I entered the business world and qualified as a Chartered Secretary. I have extensive business experience: as company secretary, in senior executive positions, and in the financial markets as fund manager of institutional and private investment portfolios. Early retirement ended my long detour away from writing and enabled me to devote more time to it.
I have a broad range of interests, including literature and the arts; sport in general, and as an experienced runner and orienteer; the natural world, including hiking and birding with my wife, Judith; and I have travelled extensively.
I harness my wide range of experiences and interests into my writing, always trying to produce something unusual and interesting for the reader.
